A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO OFFER THE CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THOMAS SIDNEY BASS, HEAD FOOTBALL COACH OF SENECA HIGH SCHOOL ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AND ON BEING NAMED THE 1999 RECIPIENT OF THE DISTINGUISHED COACH AWARD FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, Coach Tom Bass has ended a brilliant career after thirty-seven years in football; and

Whereas, Tom Bass was born on September 18, 1935, in Mooresville, North Carolina, is the son of Ola Mae Bass and the late T. G. Bass, and is married to Dee Bass; and

Whereas, Tom Bass graduated from Central High School in Mooresville in 1953 as "Most Athletic"; continued his education at Maryville College, graduating in 1961 with a B.A in Biology; graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Masters/United States Sports Academy; and attended one year at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland; and

Whereas, Tom Bass served his country in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne, Pathfinder Platoon with 69 jumps; and

Whereas, he is the loving father of sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen and Barbie Bass and John and Samantha Bass; daughter Laura Bass; daughter and son-in-law DeAnne and Robbie Shoenleben; and the proud grandparents of Andrew, Hannah, and Ian; and

Whereas, Coach Bass' coaching experience prior to Seneca High School includes: Sevier County High School in Tennessee (1962-65); University of Tennessee as Freshman Coach (1966); Clemson University as Freshman Coach under Coach Frank Howard (1967-70), Defensive Line Coach under Coach Hootie Ingram (1970-72), Defensive End Coach under Coach Parker (1963-76), Running Back/Administrative Assistant under Coach Pell (1977), and Administrative Assistant under Coach Danny Ford (1978-79); and

Whereas, Coach Bass began his distinguished career at Seneca High School on August 1, 1980, served as Athletic Director from 1983-99, and initially planned to retire on March 31, 1995; however, he continued coaching football at Seneca High until December 1998; and

Whereas, he ends his illustrious career at Seneca High School with 209 wins, 69 losses, 2 shut outs, 96 games where the opponents were held scoreless, led his football team to the "Final 4" five times, the Seneca Football Team was in the State Finals in 1996, and seventy-seven athletes signed full scholarships during his tenure. Coach Bass' best season was in 1983 with 10 shut outs, only 29 total points scored by opponents in 14 games; and

Whereas, Coach Bass was named the National Coach of the Year in 1983; South Carolina Coach of the Year 3 times; Up-State Area Coach of the Year 3 times; 3-A Region Coach of the Year 8 times; Shrine Bowl Head Coach for the South Team in 1996; and Head Coach of the North-South Game in 1991; and

Whereas, Coach Bass' most recent honor was being named the 1999 Recipient of the Distinguished Coach Award from the South Carolina Football Coaches Association - 500-600 football coaches were in attendance as well as Governor Hodges; and

Whereas, Coach Bass has touched many lives in his thirty-six seasons, and his contributions have earned him the justifiable affection and respect of all those with whom he has come in contact; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of South Carolina are proud of the role Coach Tom Bass has played in raising the profile of football and other sports in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, offer their congratulations and best wishes to Thomas Sidney Bass, Head Football Coach of Seneca High School on the occasion of his retirement and on being named the 1999 Recipient of the Distinguished Coach Award from the South Carolina Football Coaches Association.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Thomas Sidney Bass.
