A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-701 SO AS TO DESIGNATE THE "CRAPE MYRTLE" AS THE OFFICIAL STATE SHRUB.

Whereas, the Crape Myrtle belongs to the family Lythraceae and is classified as Lagerstroemia indica; and

Whereas, the Crape Myrtle is an ornamental shrub that is cultivated and found throughout South Carolina for its clusters of white to red or lavender flowers. Now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 1-1-701. The Crape Myrtle, Lagerstroemia indica, is designated as the official state shrub."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
