A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 56-3-230, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION, SO AS TO REQUIRE THE SELLER, RATHER THAN THE PURCHASER, OF NEWLY ACQUIRED VEHICLES TO REGISTER AND LICENSE SUCH VEHICLES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 56-3-230 of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Section 121I, Part II, Act 497 of 1994, is further amended to read:

"Section 56-3-230. (A) Every owner of a vehicle subject to registration and for which a license is required shall make application to the department for the registration and licensing of the vehicle upon the appropriate forms furnished by the department. Every application must bear the signature of the owner.

(B) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (A), the seller of a vehicle subject to the provisions of this section, upon completion of the sale, shall make application to the department for registration and licensure of the vehicle in the name of the new owner."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
