TO JOIN THE LEADERS OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY IN THEIR MUCH-DESERVED RECOGNITION OF JOHN S. POOLE AS THE 2002 RECIPIENT OF THE ALAN R. WILLIS SOCIETY OF SERVICE AWARD, AND EXPRESS THE PROFOUND APPRECIATION OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MR. POOLE FOR HIS LAUDABLE HISTORY OF SERVICE TO THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SPARTANBURG AND TO THE STATE.
Whereas, John S. Poole, distinguished and dedicated visionary on behalf of the citizens of Spartanburg, has been selected the recipient of the 2002 Alan R. Willis Society of Service Award by the Spartanburg Development Association; and
Whereas, this award is only the most recent in a long line of similar acknowledgments of Mr. Poole's varied volunteer efforts to help realize the dreams of Spartanburg citizens; and
Whereas, none of these attempts to recognize and honor John Poole can adequately reflect the immense impact made by his enthusiasm and excitement on the building of a better life for the people of Spartanburg and South Carolina; and
Whereas, this University of South Carolina swimming letterman pulled up his Rhode Island roots to follow up a successful academic experience, in which he earned Phi Beta Kappa honors, with a loving marriage to the former Lynn White of Columbia, in which they are raising two fine sons; and
Whereas, he has been a beacon of intelligence and integrity in the banking industry in this State since he received his 1976 MBA from Carolina; and
Whereas, his early and energetic commitment to both the City and County of Spartanburg and the State of South Carolina has resulted in his service in leadership roles in most of the major nonprofit community efforts, including chairmanships of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and the Charles Lea Center, and memberships on the boards of the Arts Partnerships, Spartanburg Development County, Rotary Club, South Carolina Banker's Association, Private Industry Council, and Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Mental Retardation; and
Whereas, John S. Poole has been honored numerous times for his outstanding service, including the Spartanburg Chamber's 2000 Neville Holcombe Distinguished Citizen Award, 1999 Outstanding Spartanburg Development Council Award, 1998-99 Leadership Spartanburg Alumnus Award, 1996 Kiwanis Citizen of the Year and Advocate of the Year from the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children, 1995 United Way Citizen of the Year, and 1991 Rotarian and Young Banker of the Year; and
Whereas, in spite of his history of dedication and service and the many acknowledgements of his tireless efforts, John S. Poole's passion for the people of Spartanburg is undiminished; and
Whereas, it is fitting for the State of South Carolina to honor its most loyal advocates. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate join the leaders of Spartanburg County in their much-deserved recognition of John S. Poole as the 2002 recipient of the Alan R. Willis Society of Service Award, and express the profound appreciation of the State of South Carolina to Mr. Poole for his laudable history of service to the City and County of Spartanburg and to the State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Poole.
