EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF DR. MARTIN HERBERT ZWERLING OF AIKEN COUNTY, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, Martin Herbert Zwerling, M.D., FACS, a native of Brooklyn, New York, passed away May 10, 2002, at the age of 76; and
Whereas, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in New York City and received his medical degree from Columbia University at the age of twenty; he completed his residency in otorhinolaryngology and fellowships in head and neck surgery; and
Whereas, Dr. Zwerling was the co-founder and former publisher of several weekly newspapers and an accomplished musician and writer; he founded the Suffolk County Hearing and Speech Center in New York, often lectured in his capacity as a physician, and was published in numerous medical journals; and
Whereas, while born in Brooklyn, Dr. Zwerling embraced his adopted home of South Carolina where he became a very active and beloved member of the Aiken community and the medical profession in South Carolina; and
Whereas, he served as chief of numerous hospitals in Aiken, as well as in Long Island, NewYork, was a judge for the Board of Medical Examiners of South Carolina, and served as guest editor for the South Carolina Medical Society; and
Whereas, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife Nancy Solomon Zwerling and was the beloved father of two daughters and one son and the adored grandfather of eight grandchildren; and
Whereas, Dr. Zwerling made significant contributions to the medical profession and was an outstanding, caring, and distinguished physician, as well as a valued member of the community; he will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Dr. Martin Herbert Zwerling of Aiken County and extends sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Zwerling's family.
