TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-25-65 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT BEGINNING WITH SCHOOL YEAR 2001-2002, THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FROM EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT ACT FUNDS SHALL DISBURSE TO THE SEVERAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS OF THIS STATE FUNDS SUFFICIENT TO GRANT TO ALL CERTIFIED TEACHERS WHO ARE EMPLOYED AS OF AUGUST THIRTIETH OF THAT YEAR BY A SCHOOL DISTRICT TO TEACH IN THE CLASSROOM TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THAT SCHOOL YEAR TO OFFSET EXPENSES INCURRED BY THEM FOR TEACHING SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE EDUCATION OF THE STUDENTS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-25-65. Beginning with school year 2001-2002, the Department of Education from Education Improvement Act funds shall disburse to the several school districts of this State funds sufficient to grant to all certified teachers who are employed as of August thirtieth of that year by a school district to teach in the classroom two hundred dollars for that school year to offset expenses incurred by them for teaching supplies and materials directly related to the education of the students. The Department of Education shall forward these funds to each school district no later than September fifteenth of the school year. School districts must disburse these funds to the classroom teachers within one month of receipt from the Department of Education. Funds distributed to school districts or allocated to schools must not supplant existing supply money paid to teachers from other sources."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
