A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND GIFFORD SHAW FOR THE VALIANT DISPLAY OF HEROISM HE EXHIBITED BY SUBDUING A DERANGED PASSENGER AND SAVING THE LIVES OF THE THREE HUNDRED NINETY-EIGHT PEOPLE ABOARD HIS BRITISH AIRWAYS FLIGHT FROM LONDON TO NAIROBI.

Whereas, Gifford Shaw, a businessman from Sumter, was on his way to Uganda for a two-week teaching mission with his friend Clarke Bynum, when he helped save the lives of three hundred ninety-eight people aboard a British Airway's flight from London to Nairobi, a flight he was only on because he had missed his original flight due to inclement weather; and

Whereas, Shaw felt the estimated nineteen thousand foot drop in altitude and heard the screaming and turmoil coming from the cockpit; and

Whereas, Gifford Shaw and Clarke Bynum burst into the cockpit to find a Kenyan man, approximately six feet tall and two hundred twenty-five pounds, attacking the pilot and causing the plane to plummet; and

Whereas, Shaw grabbed the assailant by the leg and, with the help of Clarke Bynum and others, wrestled him to the ground and pulled him from the cockpit to a seat where the assailant was handcuffed and strapped in for the remaining two hours of the flight; and

Whereas, the plane landed safely in Nairobi, Kenya with passengers and crew suffering only minor injuries; and

Whereas, Shaw and Bynum attribute their actions to God and know that they can count on Him to get them through any situation; and

Whereas, Gifford Shaw said that even though he and Bynum look forward to spending time with their families, they "would like to use as many opportunities as [they] can to tell a story of God's provision for [them] and His saving that plane." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Gifford Shaw for the valiant display of heroism he exhibited by subduing a deranged passenger and saving the lives of the three hundred ninety-eight people aboard the British Airways flight from London to Nairobi, Kenya.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Gifford Shaw.
