A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MAJOR GENERAL ARNOLD FIELDS FOR HIS HONORABLE AND OUTSTANDING MILITARY CAREER IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS AND COMMEND HIM FOR THE MANY DECORATIONS HE HAS EARNED OVER THE PAST THIRTY-TWO YEARS AND FOR HIS CONTINUING LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY.

Whereas, Major General Fields, commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1969, is a native of Early Branch, South Carolina. After basic training, he was assigned to the Second Marine Division where he served as infantry platoon commander and company executive officer; and

Whereas, in addition to earning a bachelor of science degree in agriculture and masters degree in management, the Major General graduated from the Amphibious Warfare School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Army War College; and

Whereas, in 1971, Major General Fields was assigned to the Third Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan, as platoon commander and company executive officer with the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines; and

Whereas, upon returning to the United States in 1972, Major General Fields served as recruit series commandeer and assistant director of the Drill Instructor School at Parris Island Marine Corps Station; and

Whereas, in 1974, Major General Fields began three years' service as an instructor in the Marine Corps Development Education Command in Quantico, Virginia. He also completed a year of study at the Amphibious Warfare School before transferring to the Third Marine Division in 1978 where he was an infantry company commander; and

Whereas, Major General Fields was assigned to the Sixth Marine Corps District in 1979 and served for three years as Officer in Charge of the District Contact Team. Following one year at intermediate level school he returned to the Sixth District as the commanding officer of the Corps Recruiting Station, Orlando, Florida; and

Whereas, succeeding assignments took Major General Fields to North Africa, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. Under his command, the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, Second Marine Division participated in combat operations against Iraqi forces during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; and

Whereas, Major General Fields' decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Viet Nam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal; and

Whereas, Major General Fields was promoted to his current rank on August 6, 1999, and currently serves as the Director of Marine Corps Staff. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize Major General Arnold Fields for his honorable and outstanding military career in the United States Marine Corps and commend him for the many decorations he has earned over the past thirty-two years and for his continuing loyal and dedicated service to our country.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Major General Arnold Fields.
