CONGRATULATING JOY E. SOVDE UPON RECEIVING THE MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN AWARD PRESENTED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION FOR THE EDUCATION OF YOUNG CHILDREN AND TO EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR HER TIRELESS EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S CHILDREN.
Whereas, Joy E. Sovde has been selected by the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children to receive the Marian Wright Edelman Award which brings her much praise and well-deserved recognition; and
Whereas, her distinguished career as an advocate and champion of causes has in recent years largely focused on education and preparing young children for school; and
Whereas, Ms. Sovde is the project coordinator of "Success by 6" which is designed to increase the number of children entering first grade ready to learn; and
Whereas, she has forged effective alliances among business leaders, policymakers, and the early childhood education community to further the initiatives of "Success by 6"; and
Whereas, her innovative approaches and exceptional leadership, and her true devotion and tireless efforts have created outstanding early childhood education programs; and
Whereas, Ms. Sovde was the driving force and creator of a childcare program in the Arthurtown community in Columbia which brought together Habitat for Humanity, the United Parcel Service, the prison system, and many community volunteers creating a partnership that produced not only an outstanding daycare program but also a health clinic and an after school program; and
Whereas, among other programs that she's been instrumental in developing are training for childcare providers and parents, health and developmental screenings for children, improvement of childcare program standards, promoting family friendly policies in the workplace, and welcome packets for parents of newborns; and
Whereas, South Carolina is fortunate to have a person of Ms. Sovde's talent, knowledge, and skills advocating on behalf of South Carolina's children our state's most precious resource. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Joy E. Sovde upon receiving the Marian Wright Edelman Award presented by the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children and express their appreciation for her tireless efforts on behalf of South Carolina's children.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Joy E. Sovde.
