TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-26-87 SO AS TO REQUIRE, IN ADDITION TO LICENSURE, THAT SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKERS BE CERTIFIED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMPLETE SIX SEMESTER HOURS WITHIN FIVE YEARS FOR RENEWAL OF CERTIFICATION.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-26-87. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person who is employed in a public school as a school social worker must be certified by the Department of Education in addition to being licensed pursuant to Title 40, Chapter 63. To renew certification as a school social worker, the individual must have completed, within five years of being certified, six semester hours of course work related to the education profession, and as approved by the board, from an accredited institution of higher education."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
