A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE MEMBERS OF THE T. L. HANNA MARCHING BAND OF ANDERSON ON BEING NAMED THE GRAND CHAMPION OF THE REX PARADE, THE OLDEST NEW ORLEANS MARDI GRAS PARADE.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the T. L. Hanna Marching Band was named Grand Champion of the 2001 Rex Parade; and

Whereas, the parade, started in 1872, which included twenty-seven floats and about eighteen bands, according to band director Richard Baskins, consisted of a six mile route, and the crowd was estimated to be 850,000 people; and

Whereas, the band's performance included a mixture of jazz and funk geared toward the Mardi Gras atmosphere as they marched and danced their way down the parade route; and

Whereas, there are fifty-two parades during the Mardi Gras season but the Rex Parade is the "old money" parade with great tradition and great excitement; and

Whereas, it is the second time in four years the band has won the Rex Parade. The T. L. Hanna Marching Band also won in 1987 and 1989 and was runner up in 1991. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the South Carolina House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the members of the T. L. Hanna Marching Band on being named the Grand Champion of the Rex Parade, the oldest New Orleans Mardi Gras parade.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the T. L. Hanna Marching Band of Anderson.
