TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE SAMUEL BOYLSTON AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are sad to learn of the death of their former colleague, the Honorable Samuel Boylston, who passed away at the age of seventy-seven in his Columbia home on Friday, March 2, 2001; and

Whereas, he was the beloved husband of the late Mrs. June Busbee Boylston, the proud father of Mrs. Norma C. Brown, Mrs. Robin C. Caldwell, grandfather of four grandchildren, and the brother of Mr. Raymond P. Boylston; and

Whereas, Sam Boylston was born in Orangeburg County near Springfield, he graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1950, and while in school he was cartoonist for The Gamecock and art editor of the South Caroliniana Magazine and a member of Kappa Sigma Kappa; and

Whereas, Sam Boylston proudly represented the people of Orangeburg County in the House of Representatives from 1951 to 1956, during which time he served as vice chairman of the Education and Public Works and the Labor, Commerce and Industry Committees. He was also the town attorney in Springfield and a member of the South Carolina Bar Association; and

Whereas, Sam Boylston was executive vice president of the South Carolina Trucking Association and worked diligently at that post until his retirement in 1988. Afterward he continued to serve as a lobbyist and consultant for the trucking association and played a major role in the passage of important trucking legislation in this State; and

Whereas, Sam Boylston was a veteran of World War II who served with the Thirteenth Army Air Force in the South Pacific, and was former commander of Springfield's American Legion Post No. 54. He was also a member of the Columbia Rotary Club and Forest Lake Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, he was a colorful and gregarious man who was a popular and much sought after speaker among statewide civic organizations and a man who was always ready with a big smile and a warm greeting for all; and

Whereas, with his death, the people of South Carolina have lost a successful and respected business and governmental leader and a good friend. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their profound sorrow upon the death of the Honorable Samuel Boylston and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of the Honorable Samuel Boylston.
