A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF OF THE W. WYMAN KING ACADEMY BASEBALL TEAM ON THEIR MEMORABLE AND RECORD SETTING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THE "KNIGHTS" ON WINNING THE 2001 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS AA BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the "Knights" of the W. Wyman King Academy (King Academy) Varsity Baseball Team, through constant teamwork and determination, achieved their goal of winning the school's first South Carolina Independent School Association Class AA Baseball state championship; and

Whereas, the King Academy Baseball Team completed a record setting twenty-five win season that included a record number of stolen bases in a season with one hundred twenty, a record thirty-four home runs in one season, and a record low team earned run average of 1.95; and

Whereas, the "Knights" of King Academy worked their way through a tough regular season schedule and, having beaten St. Joseph's High School and Wardlaw Academy each twice, the "Knights" finished the season undefeated in conference play, winning their fourth conference championship in four years; and

Whereas, King Academy began its playoff run with a decisive 17-2 victory over Colleton Preparatory Academy, and won the lower state title by twice defeating J.F. Byrnes Academy, first in a hard-fought 4-3 victory then in a 12-2 routing; finally the "Knights" moved into the best-two-out-of-three game championship series to face Carolina Academy; and

Whereas, the first game of the championship series was played on Carolina Academy's home field, this proved to be no obstacle for the "Knights" of King Academy as they jumped out to a four run lead in the first inning; Carolina refused to quit, however, and tied the game at four; the game continued with a flurry of runs from both teams, but when the dust settled, King Academy held on to win by a score of 10-8; and

Whereas, the second game of the championship series was played on King Academy's home field but Carolina took an early 1 run lead; the "Knights" surged ahead in the second inning to lead 2-1, and then added one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to lead 5-1; although Carolina added another run later, the "Knights'" early runs and late pitching brilliance allowed them to hold on for the victory and their first-ever Baseball State Title; and

Whereas, the 2001 King Academy Varsity Baseball Team was made up of hard-working student athletes that included Josh Meyer, Zach Matthews, Sid Fallaw, Meredith Havird, Jason Hartley, Taylor Rutland, Trey Padgett, Justin Anderson, Matt Wood, Jonathon Watkins, Wyatt Eidson, Andrew Polatty, Brandon McCormick, Steven Merchant, Nick Willis, Nate Deveney, Randy Sharpe, and Sammy Wheeler; and

Whereas, the "Knights" captured the state championship under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Prochaska who, as a result of his team's accomplishments, was named the Region I Class AA Coach of the Year as well the South Carolina Independent School Association Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly takes great pride in recognizing the King Academy Varsity Baseball Team for their terrific season of competition and wishes the team members much success in their future endeavors both on and off the athletic field. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend the players, coaches, and staff of the W. Wyman King Academy Varsity Baseball Team on their memorable and record setting season and congratulate the "Knights" on winning the 2001 South Carolina Independent School Association Class AA Baseball State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Mike Prochaska and the members of the King Academy Varsity Baseball Team.

----XX----
