A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME THE AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED STATES FROM THE REPUBLIC OF NIGER, AFRICA, HIS EXCELLENCY JOSEPH DIATTA, TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ALLENDALE COUNTY AS HE AND HIS DISTINGUISHED WIFE, THE HONORABLE HAUOA DIATTA, VISIT THE COUNTY ON JUNE 22 AND 23, 2001, FOR THE PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHING CULTURAL TIES AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE PEOPLE OF ALLENDALE AND THE PEOPLE OF THE WEST AFRICAN REPUBLIC OF NIGER.

Whereas, His Excellency Joseph Diatta, Ambassador to the United States from the Republic of Niger in West Africa, and his wife, the Honorable Hauoa Diatta, will arrive in Allendale for a visit June 22 and 23, 2001; and

Whereas, His Excellency Diatta served as Ambassador to the United States from 1982 to 1989, as Ambassador to China from 1988 to 1990, and since May 1997, is serving his second appointment as Ambassador to the United States; and

Whereas, the Ambassador and his wife, two well known and respected diplomats, were invited by the Allendale based organization, Citizens for Good Communities, and their visit is sponsored by the State Department of Education, Allendale County Schools, USC Salkehatchie, and the Technical College of the Low Country; and

Whereas, it is important in this rapidly changing world that communication and understanding between nations and cultures be encouraged and fostered; and

Whereas, this visit will identify common cultural issues that impact education and economic development in both Allendale and the Republic of Niger in West Africa and will educate those committed to understanding West African heritage; and

Whereas, it is an honor for the House of Representatives to add its welcome for the distinguished visitors to Allendale County. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, welcome the Ambassador to the United States from the Republic of Niger, Africa, His Excellency Joseph Diatta, to the State of South Carolina and Allendale County as he and his distinguished wife, the Honorable Hauoa Diatta, visit the county on June 22 and 23, 2001, for the purpose of establishing cultural ties and better understanding between the people of Allendale and the people of the West African Republic of Niger.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to His Excellency Joseph Diatta.
