A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO OFFER THE SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE PALMETTO STATE'S NEWLY CROWNED "MISS SOUTH CAROLINA 2001", JEANNA RANEY, OF INMAN AND TO EXTEND OUR WARMEST WISHES TO HER DURING THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT WHICH WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2001, IN ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY.

Whereas, twenty-year-old Jeanna Raney is a resident of Inman, South Carolina, and was a contestant in the Miss South Carolina Pageant as the reigning Miss Greater Greer. During the week of competition for this coveted title against forty-one contestants, she captured a preliminary swimwear award on Thursday evening and a tap dance to Harry Connick, Jr.'s "Just Kiss Me" earned her a preliminary talent award Friday evening; and

Whereas, her father, Sam Raney, her twenty-six-year-old brother, Jeremy, and Jeremy's wife, Crystal, were present on Saturday evening, July 14, 2001, when Jeanna Raney was crowned Miss South Carolina 2001 before a packed house at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium; and

Whereas, Jeanna is fortunate to have as her official chaperone to the Miss America Pageant our colleague Representative Rita Allison. For the past twenty-two years, Representative Allison has served as the official chaperone for Miss South Carolina at the Miss America Pageant; and

Whereas, the tall, pretty blonde has been groomed for pageants all of her life. She has held numerous titles. Her parents met at a beauty pageant. Jeanna even appeared as an extra in the movie "Beautiful", which had a pageant theme; and

Whereas, two years ago Jeanna was not thinking about being Miss South Carolina. She did not want to enter without a platform that was meaningful to her. Then, in September of 1999, Jeanna and her family were faced with the sudden death of her mother, Rhonda. Suddenly the pageant became something she felt compelled, almost obligated, to enter. As her first official duty, a day after being named Miss South Carolina 2001, Jeanna Raney stood at her first news conference Sunday morning and spoke strongly about the tragedy that changed her life. She plans to use the crown to continue her service platform by bringing awareness and inspiration to others concerning mental illness and suicide prevention. At the conclusion of her reign as our Miss South Carolina, Jeanna will convert the crown to a becoming hat and continue helping other individuals find something positive in family tragedy; and

Whereas, Jeanna Raney is a 1991 honors graduate of Chapman High School and is a rising junior at the University of South Carolina, where she is majoring in business administration; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to honor and recognize the courage of this fine young woman and we, along with the citizens of Inman and our great State, are extremely proud of our new "Miss South Carolina 2001". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, offer their sincere congratulations to the Palmetto State's newly crowned "Miss South Carolina 2001", Jeanna Raney, of Inman and extend our warmest wishes to her during the Miss America Pageant which will be held on September 22, 2001, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss South Carolina, Jeanna Raney.
