TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE SPARTANBURG VIKINGS FOOTBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE CLASS AAAA, DIVISION ONE CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2001, AT WILLIAMS-BRICE STADIUM AND TO WISH THEM MUCH SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are proud to recognize the Spartanburg Vikings for winning the Class AAAA, Division One Championship Football Game Saturday, December 1, 2001; and
Whereas, Spartanburg High School defeated Northwestern 24-21 in overtime in a hard-fought, close game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia; and
Whereas, Spartanburg's Travis Lewis scored in the first quarter, but the team was down 21-7 at the half. The Vikings rallied when Brandon Sims and Antwan Surratt scored in the third and fourth quarters to tie the game; and
Whereas, in an exciting overtime, the Vikings blocked Northwestern's attempted field goal and soon returned with a successful field goal of their own to win the game. Senior kicker Jared Clifford was responsible for the successful field goal as well as the three extra points; and
Whereas, Spartanburg Vikings finished this season with a winning record of 13-2, and topped it off with this exhilarating championship victory over Northwestern High School; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives congratulate the Spartanburg Viking Football Team on a winning season and a tough victory over Northwestern in the championship game. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate the Spartanburg Vikings Football Team on winning the Class AAAA, Division One Championship Saturday, December 1, 2001, at Williams-Brice Stadium and wish them much success in the future.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Spartanburg High School of Spartanburg.
