A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE CHIEF DOUG MATHIS OF SUMTER FOR THIRTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE SUMTER FIRE DEPARTMENT, TO THANK HIM FOR HIS DEVOTED LEADERSHIP AS FIRE CHIEF, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina convey their appreciation to Sumter Fire Chief Doug Mathis for his thirty years of service and leadership in the Sumter Fire Department; and

Whereas, Chief Doug Mathis was born in Sumter and moved around with his family as a child while his father was in the military. He returned to Sumter and graduated from Thomas Sumter Academy in 1972; and

Whereas, Chief Mathis debated between becoming a firefighter or a police officer. He ultimately chose firefighting as a means to get involved with saving lives. After thirty years, he still thinks he chose the best job in the city; and

Whereas, Chief Mathis worked his way through the ranks of the fire department. He was lieutenant, captain, administrative officer, assistant chief, and appointed chief in 1999; and

Whereas, Chief Mathis is a young retiree at age forty-nine, but he wanted to retire early enough in life while he is physically able to enjoy whatever he wants to do, including spending time with his family; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives wish to express their gratitude to Chief Doug Mathis for his thirty years of dedicated service to the citizens of Sumter and to congratulate him on his retirement as Fire Chief. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Chief Doug Mathis of Sumter for thirty years of dedicated service to the Sumter Fire Department, thank him for his devoted leadership as Fire Chief, and extend best wishes for happiness and success upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chief Doug Mathis of Sumter.
