A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SENSE OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE NEED TO ELIMINATE THE HEALTH DISPARITIES AMONG THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND FOR THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO SUPPORT STUDIES, POLICIES, AND PRACTICES DEDICATED TO THE ELIMINATION OF THESE HEALTH DISPARITIES AND TO THE REDUCTION OF BARRIERS TO ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE.

Whereas, the State of South Carolina needs more funding to support studies, policies, and practices dedicated to the elimination of health disparities among the citizens of our State and to the reduction of barriers to adequate health care; and

Whereas, a vital mission of the State of South Carolina is to protect and promote personal, community, and environmental health, and to exercise leadership in health policy development and action; and

Whereas, health disparities are primarily the result of race and ethnicity, socioeconomic conditions, and other social inequalities; and

Whereas, in 1998, President Clinton committed the United States to the goal of eliminating health disparities in the nation in six areas of health care by 2010, and this continues to be a national goal for the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, it is necessary to develop interdisciplinary approaches to research and practice to address the social determinants of health and the development of a diverse public health workforce, which reflects the backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of the population it serves; and

Whereas, there also needs to be increased coordination and participation among agencies, organizations, and coalitions at the local, county, and state level that advocate the elimination of disparities in health and health care. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sense for the need to eliminate the health disparities among the citizens of South Carolina and for the State of South Carolina to support studies, policies, and practices dedicated to the elimination of these health disparities and to the reduction of barriers to adequate health care.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Public Health Association.
