A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND PROFESSOR JOHN EVANS ATTA MILLS FOR HIS SIGNIFICANT AND COPIOUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA AND TO THE WORLD.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to recognize Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the Republic of Ghana for his many contributions to his country and to the world; and

Whereas, John Evans Atta Mills was born July 21, 1944, in Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana; and

Whereas, Professor Mills' love of education began at Achimota Secondary School, where he completed the Advanced Level Certificate in 1963; and

Whereas, he continued his quest for knowledge, earning a bachelors degree and professional certificate in Law from the University of Ghana, Legon in 1967, and he was selected as a Fulbright scholar at Stanford Law School while earning his Ph.D. in Oriental and African Studies from the University of London; and

Whereas, Dr. Mills began his teaching career as a lecturer on the faculty of law at the University of Ghana, Legon. Over the next twenty years he served on numerous boards and committees and rose to the level of associate professor; and

Whereas, while at the University of Ghana, Professor Mills traveled the world presenting research papers and went to Temple University in the United States and Leiden University in Holland as a visiting lecturer and professor; and

Whereas, Professor Mills has authored more than a dozen publications on taxation and has held various positions with financial institutions throughout Ghana; and

Whereas, because of his financial familiarity and proven professionalism, Dr. Mills received several important appointments including Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service of Ghana and Vice President of the Republic of Ghana; and

Whereas, Professor Mills also supports community activities through organizations such as the Ghana Hockey Association, National Sports Council of Ghana, and Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club; and

Whereas, Dr. Mills is married to Ernestina Naadu, an educationist; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure and admiration that the General Assembly extols Professor John Evans Atta Mills, a remarkable citizen of the Republic of Ghana and the world. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Professor John Evans Atta Mills for his significant and copious contributions to the Republic of Ghana and to the world.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. John Evans Atta Mills of the Republic of Ghana.
