A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE, COMMEND, HONOR, AND EXPRESS THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO COACH DOUG LOWE, HEAD BASKETBALL COACH OF SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL "VIKINGS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COACHING ABILITIES AND GUIDANCE IN LEADING THE "VIKINGS" TO THE 2001-2002 CLASS AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, we are proud to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of Spartanburg High School's Head Basketball Coach Doug Lowe upon the completion of his twenty-third season at the helm of his alma mater. Thus far, he has not recorded a losing season; and

Whereas, Coach Lowe ranks ninth in the State with four hundred seventy-eight career victories, thirteen regional titles, six trips to the upper state finals, and never a losing season -- yet, no state-championship banners to hang from the rafters. He has been close, oh so close, losing the game in 1987 and again in 1989. This season is undoubtedly the pinnacle of his outstanding coaching career. The dramatic, gut-wrenching finish will be a game to go down in Spartanburg High School's history books. The "Vikings" captured the 2001-2002 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship with a thrilling victory of 63-61 over Richland Northeast High School; and

Whereas, Coach Doug Lowe still gets excited and smiles a bit broader when the state title game is mentioned. He has been quoted as saying, "We just had the right chemistry and the good fortune of having breaks going our way"; and

Whereas, Doug still holds Spartanburg High School's basketball record with fifty-one points in a single game; and

Whereas, Doug Lowe is a graduate of Wofford College and distinguished himself on the hardwoods where he played on the college basketball team. His outstanding contributions to his team have been acknowledged by his induction into the Wofford College Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, we pause in our deliberations to accord special recognition to this very humble, very grateful, and very appreciative individual, who has not only produced winning seasons, but also many athletes who are responsible and dedicated citizens in their respective communities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby recognize, commend, honor, and congratulate Coach Doug Lowe, Head Basketball Coach of Spartanburg High School "Vikings" Boys Basketball Team, for his outstanding coaching abilities and guidance in leading the "Vikings" to the 2001-2002 Class AAAA State Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Doug Lowe.
