A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND CHARLIE THOMAS WALKER OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY FOR HIS MANY YEARS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A RADIO BROADCASTER IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND EXPRESS SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR HIS OUTSTANDING EFFORTS TO ENTERTAIN AND INFORM THE PEOPLE OF THIS STATE.

Whereas, Mr. Charlie T. Walker of Williamsburg County has served the South Carolina public and broadcast industry for over fifty-five wonderful years; and

Whereas, Charlie Walker has worked for a number of radio stations around the Palmetto State including WNOK in Columbia, WGCD in Chester, WKDK in Newberry, WKYB in Hemingway, WDKD and WWKT both in Kingstree, WKHT in Bishopville, WDXY and WICI both in Sumter, and WIBZ in Wedgefield; and

Whereas, his proud service in the United States Army during the Korean War included keeping up the morale of his fellow soldiers by working at Radio Station Gypsy on the Armed Forces Radio Network from 1952 to 1954, for which he was later awarded a Certificate of Achievement; and

Whereas, Charlie Walker and his beloved wife of forty-four years, Peggy Floyd, reside in Kingstree, South Carolina, and have been blessed with one child and two grandchildren; and

Whereas, an active member of his community, Mr. Walker gives generously of his time and talents to make the Pee Dee area a better place to live, taking part in a number of on-air community fundraising events to help those in need. In 1990, for example, he raised seventeen thousand dollars for the Williamsburg Crime Stoppers program; and

Whereas, this terrific communicator, both over the airwaves and in print, has written many newspaper articles for the Kingstree Weekly News and the Florence Morning News, has been honored as Journalist of the Year for four years running by the Florence Morning News, and was recognized as having the Best Column in a weekly newspaper by the South Carolina Press Association in 1986; and

Whereas, Charlie Walker has received numerous awards from his peers in broadcasting for his lively and unique style of broadcasting, including his selection by the Columbia Broadcast Network (CBS) to represent South Carolina in 1950 on a live radio show, and was once chosen Disc Jockey of the Month by the legendary Grand Ole Opry, WSM Radio in Nashville, Tennessee, for his accomplishments in South Carolina; and

Whereas, his work in radio, which includes having broadcast over six hundred high school football games, has been most appreciated by those in his community, having twice been selected Man of the Year for Kingstree, South Carolina, by the town's Chamber of Commerce and having January 18, 1986, declared "Charlie Walker Day" by the South Carolina House of Representatives; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the members of the General Assembly pause to reflect on the long and remarkable career of Mr. Charlie Walker and to thank him for all he has done to serve the citizens of his community and, indeed, those of the entire State.

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend Charlie Thomas Walker of Williamsburg County for his many years and accomplishments as a radio broadcaster in South Carolina and express their sincere appreciation for his outstanding efforts to entertain and inform the people of this State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Walker.
