TO STRONGLY ENCOURAGE JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY TO RETAIN ITS CAMPUS IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, a recent economic impact study determined that Johnson & Wales University's Charleston campus activities have contributed $22 million to the South Carolina economy, based on the total dollars brought into the area by the university's students, faculty, and staff, and spending on scholarships, construction, utility services, and consumer spending; and

Whereas, the Charleston campus of Johnson & Wales University, established in 1984, is located in one of America's oldest and most beautiful cities; and

Whereas, the Charleston campus is unique in both its setting and its educational focus; and

Whereas, Johnson & Wales' Charleston campus students and graduates have played a significant role in the development of the City of Charleston as a center for southern hospitality, fine dining, and outstanding hotel facilities; and

Whereas, Charleston was recently designated the most hospitable city in the country. It is the ideal city for Johnson & Wales which specializes in hospitality industry programs; and

Whereas, the Charleston campus is extremely proud of its highly qualified and competent faculty and its exceptional programs in hospitality, travel, and tourism, and the culinary arts; and

Whereas, Johnson & Wales' hands-on approach to teaching enables its graduates to be among the most sought after in the hospitality and tourism industries nationwide; and

Whereas, Johnson & Wales' students and graduates work in restaurants and hotels in Charleston and throughout the country and, further, it is hard to find a hotel or restaurant here in Charleston that doesn't employ at least one Johnson & Wales student or graduate; and

Whereas, Charleston is home to more than 15,000 students of colleges and universities located in the downtown peninsula area. The city uniquely caters to the lifestyle of the college student; and

Whereas, Charleston is a city rich in history and culture that provides many opportunities for personal growth and enrichment. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, strongly encourage Johnson & Wales University to retain its campus in Charleston, South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Stephen D. Parker, President, Johnson & Wales University, Charleston campus.
