A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE SOUTH CAROLINA WATERMELON FESTIVAL ON ITS SIXTIETH ANNUAL EVENT, AND SALUTING THE WATERMELON FESTIVAL AS THE LONGEST CONTINUING SUCH EVENT IN THE STATE.

Whereas, King Watermelon is Hampton County's best ambassador of good will; and

Whereas, the Watermelon Festival began reigning in Hampton County before World War II; the first seed planted in early spring led to the first festival in July 1939 and was the world's original Watermelon Festival; the tradition of the festival was interrupted only twice, first during World War II and again during the Korean War; and

Whereas, the festival has put Hampton County into local, state, and national headlines and over the air waves ever since the first one, spreading Hampton County's good name over the miles. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes the South Carolina Watermelon Festival on its sixtieth annual event and salutes the Watermelon Festival as the longest continuing such event in the State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the planners of the 2002 South Carolina Watermelon Festival in Hampton County.
