A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MRS. CHRISTI MCCOLLUM OF BOOKMAN ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ELGIN, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR BEING NAMED THE SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Christi McCollum, a fifth grade teacher at Bookman Road Elementary School in Richland District Two, was named South Carolina Teacher of the Year at a banquet on Friday, May 10, 2002, at the Governor's Mansion in Columbia; and

Whereas, for fifteen years Mrs. McCollum has taught school in grades two through twelve and has worked with emotionally disturbed students; and

Whereas, Mrs. McCollum believes in community involvement; she wrote a fifteen thousand dollar grant to implement a community-wide celebration to strengthen the school's bond with the surrounding neighborhoods and helped students with a bake sale to raise money for Camp Kemo; and

Whereas, a National Board Certified Teacher, Mrs. McCollum established a daily "family circle" of sharing with and listening to her class that promotes mutual respect and trust; and

Whereas, each year before school starts, she invites her students and their parents to her house for a cookout to meet them and let them have a glimpse of her life as more than a teacher; and

Whereas, Christi McCollum graduated from Winthrop University and is pursuing a master's degree in administration from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, she is married to Rick McCollum who is the minister of music at Spring Valley Baptist Church, and they have two children, Alex and Emily; and

Whereas, as Teacher of the Year, Mrs. McCollum received a dark green 2002 BMW Z-3 roadster to use for the next year as she travels the State and promotes public education and teaching; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to extol Mrs. Christi McCollum for her dedication to teaching and her enthusiasm for learning. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Mrs. Christi McCollum of Bookman Road Elementary School in Elgin, South Carolina, for being named the South Carolina Teacher of the Year and wish her much success and happiness in her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Christi McCollum of Bookman Road Elementary School in Elgin, South Carolina.
