A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. TOM ABBOTT FOR HIS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AS PRINCIPAL OF COWPENS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND TO WISH HIM MANY YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Dr. Tom Abbott, one of the state's finest school administrators, is retiring as Principal of Cowpens Elementary School, a position in which he has performed admirably for the past fifteen years; and

Whereas, Dr. Abbott is one of the most highly qualified education administrators in South Carolina having earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Glassboro State College in New Jersey, and a Masters degree, Ed.S., and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Abbott worked in a variety of fields prior to becoming an educator; he began helping expand young minds first as a science teacher in Aiken and Barnwell high schools and later as the Principal of Barnwell Middle School; and

Whereas, Dr. Abbott honed his skills as a school administrator while a supervisor at the South Carolina Department of Education's Administrator's Leadership Academy and while working as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel for Union County Schools; and

Whereas, Dr. Abbott's tenure as Principal of Cowpens Elementary School has been marked by the highest quality instruction, with a special emphasis on reading skills, care and concern for the safety and well being of all children, the establishment of a community based mentoring program, and remarkable beautification of the school building and grounds; and

Whereas, one of Dr. Abbott's key tenets is that while learning is important, students should also have fun during the day and look forward to coming to school and interacting with their classmates; and

Whereas, the sense of pride and commitment to excellence that Dr. Tom Abbott brought to Cowpens Elementary School will be difficult to replace; however, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly join the students, parents, and faculty of Cowpens Elementary in wishing Dr. Abbott much happiness in his well-deserved retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Dr. Tom Abbott for his outstanding performance as Principal of Cowpens Elementary School and wish him many years of health and happiness upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Tom Abbott of Cherokee County, South Carolina.
