Whereas, the year 2001 marks the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the YMCA movement in the United States; and

Whereas, the YMCA serves people of all ages, income, and abilities through a wide variety of programs and services designed to meet changing needs; and

Whereas, the YMCA of Pickens County lives its mission everyday, "To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all"; and

Whereas, the YMCA movement in the United States serves nearly eighteen million members per year as an organization that is volunteer-founded, volunteer-based, and volunteer-led; and

Whereas, YMCA programs provide a spirit of adventure that challenges members to learn new skills, try new activities, and explore other cultures while being good citizens in their community; and

Whereas, the YMCA of Pickens County is part of a national movement that serves nine million children per year, that is the nation's largest childcare provider, that currently serves one in ten teens, and that incorporates the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into all of its programs; and

Whereas, the YMCA movement has a long history of partnership with other community organizations, such as schools, hospitals, and police departments; and

Whereas, the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the YMCA movement will draw special public attention to the distinguished history of the organization and to benefits that the people of South Carolina have enjoyed as a result of the proud tradition of this organization. Now, therefore,
