              Versions of This Bill

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, A FLAGSHIP HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION OF THIS STATE AND ONE OF THE FINEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE NATION, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS BICENTENNIAL.

Whereas, on December 19, 1801, the General Assembly of South Carolina created the South Carolina College by an act beginning with the following preamble: "Whereas, the proper education of youth contributes greatly to the prosperity of society, and ought always to be an object of legislative attention; and whereas the establishment of a college in a central part of the state, where all of its youth may be educated, will highly promote the instruction, the good order and the harmony of the whole community"; and

Whereas, as a result, December 19, 2001, is the bicentennial of the University of South Carolina and of state-supported higher education in South Carolina; and

Whereas, with the support of the General Assembly of South Carolina the South Carolina College opened on January 10, 1805, and with its successor, the University of South Carolina, has educated two hundred years of leadership for South Carolina and the nation by allowing diverse people the common pursuit of knowledge in a wide range of fields; and

Whereas, with two hundred years of state support, the University of South Carolina has grown from its first class of nine students on its Columbia campus in 1805 into an institution serving approximately thirty-five thousand students on eight campuses across the Palmetto State in 2001; and

Whereas, higher education remains an important object of legislative attention, and the intent of the General Assembly of South Carolina in creating a state college in 1801 continues as a critical concern of the General Assembly in 2001. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of South Carolina, as the duly elected representatives of the people of South Carolina, expresses the Palmetto State's pride in the University of South Carolina's two hundred years of service to South Carolina, thus fulfilling the charge the General Assembly gave the institution in 1801.

Be it further resolved that the General Assembly commends the magnificent achievement of generations of faculty, students, staff, alumni, trustees, and friends who have built and maintained this noble institution for two hundred years.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. John Palms, President of the University of South Carolina.
