To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 230) inviting the Honorable John S. McCain, United States Senator from Arizona, to address the General Assembly on the issue of campaign finance reform in joint session, etc., respectfully
Has polled the Concurrent Resolution out majority favorable.
INVITING THE HONORABLE JOHN S. McCAIN, UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM ARIZONA, TO ADDRESS THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON THE ISSUE OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM IN JOINT SESSION AT A TIME MUTUALLY CONVENIENT FOR BOTH HOUSES.
Whereas, the Honorable John S. McCain has served this country faithfully for decades as a Navy pilot and as a U.S. Congressman and Senator; and
Whereas, the Honorable John McCain received the nation's highest honors -- the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross -- during his 22-year career in the U.S. Navy; and
Whereas, the Honorable John McCain is a veteran of numerous political campaigns, including the campaign for the nation's highest office; and
Whereas, the Honorable John McCain's insight into campaign finance reform has been shaped as both a candidate and an elected official; and
Whereas, the Honorable John McCain has championed campaign finance reform on the national stage long before he made it part of his presidential campaign platform; and
Whereas, his years of seeking and gaining political office has confirmed and honed belief in the need to push tirelessly for meaningful campaign finance reform; and
Whereas, campaign finance reform was considered and adopted by the General Assembly during its last session; and
Whereas, campaign finance reform is likely to be debated again when the gubernatorial task force appointed to study this issue completes its work in April; and
Whereas, the General Assembly would benefit greatly from the insight of a national figure and leader in efforts to reform campaign finance laws to ensure the confidence and trust of the citizens we are elected to serve. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the Honorable John McCain, United States Senator from Arizona, is invited to address the General Assembly on the issue of campaign finance reform in joint session at a time mutually convenient for both houses and Senator McCain, to be determined by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Senator John McCain, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
