To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4264) to request the Department of Transportation to name State Highway 72 running from marker 1-1-40 in Abbeville County to the eastern town boundary of Calhoun Falls the "Grady L. Patterson, Jr. Highway", etc., respectfully

RONALD N.FLEMING for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME STATE HIGHWAY 72 RUNNING FROM MARKER 1-1-40 IN ABBEVILLE COUNTY TO THE EASTERN TOWN BOUNDARY OF CALHOUN FALLS THE "GRADY L. PATTERSON, JR. HIGHWAY" IN HONOR OF THE DEDICATION, LOVE, AND SERVICE GRADY L. PATTERSON, JR., HAS EXHIBITED OVER HIS LIFETIME FOR HIS STATE AND COUNTRY, CULMINATING IN HIS WORK AS THE STATE TREASURER OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND HIS PROMOTION TO THE RANK OF LIEUTENANT GENERAL OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA AIR NATIONAL GUARD.

Whereas, Grady L. Patterson, Jr., born in Calhoun Falls, attended Clemson University and received an undergraduate and law degree from the University of South Carolina. For eight years he served as an Assistant Attorney General before being elected to the office of State Treasurer in 1966; and

Whereas, Grady held this esteemed position for seven full terms until 1994 and was reelected in 1998. During his service as State Treasurer, Patterson was responsible for many constitutional and legislative protections which include the establishment of a reserve fund to cover budget shortfalls, an annual debt limit, and a requirement that pension funds be used only for retirement purposes; and

Whereas, he has served not only his State, but also his country. Grady Patterson was a fighter pilot in World War II, flying combat missions from Iwo Jima in the Pacific. He served in the Air Force during both the Korean War and the Berlin crisis. He has served as Chief of the South Carolina Air National Guard; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe it is a fitting tribute to State Treasurer Grady L. Patterson to name the portion of State Highway 72 near where he was born in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby request the Department of Transportation to name State Highway 72 running from marker 1-1-40 in Abbeville County to the eastern town boundary of Calhoun Falls, the "Grady L.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
