REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS TO COORDINATE THE USE OF INMATE LABOR TO PICK UP LITTER FROM HIGHWAY RIGHTS-OF-WAY AND REGULAR MOWING MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAY RIGHTS-OF-WAY.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that in the continuing battle against roadside litter that the use of Department of Corrections inmate labor to pick up accumulated litter has been a highly effective tool; and
Whereas, the use of such inmate labor to pick up litter in advance of scheduled rights-of-way mowing maintenance by the Department of Transportation would vastly increase the effectiveness of these anti-litter efforts. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That it is the request of the General Assembly that the Department of Transportation and the Department of Corrections coordinate the use of inmate labor to pick up litter from highway rights-of-way and regularly scheduled rights-of-way mowing maintenance to insure that litter is picked up in advance of regularly scheduled mowing.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Elizabeth S. Mabry, Executive Director of the Department of Transportation, and Gary Maynard, Director Designate, Department of Corrections.
