A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 16-23-57 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT AN OWNER OF A PISTOL MUST MAINTAIN IT IN A LOCKED COMPARTMENT OR HAVE A TRIGGER LOCK PLACED ON IT WHEN THE PISTOL IS NOT BEING USED, AND TO PROVIDE A PENALTY FOR A VIOLATION OF THIS PROVISION.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Article 1, Chapter 23, Title 16 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 16-23-57.    It is unlawful for an owner of a pistol to not maintain his pistol in a locked compartment or have a trigger lock placed on it when the pistol is not in use. A person who violates this provision is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned not more than one year or fined not more than one thousand dollars."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
