A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-29-45 SO AS TO REQUIRE A COURSE IN CREDIT MANAGEMENT TO BE TAUGHT IN THE PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE STATE, AND TO AMEND SECTION 59-29-10, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO SUBJECTS REQUIRED TO BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT, SO AS TO ADD A COURSE IN CREDIT MANAGEMENT.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Chapter 29, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-29-45.    The public high schools of this State shall teach a course in credit management to include instruction on how to obtain credit, how credit is scored, how to improve credit, and other topics involving credit as the State Board may direct. This course may be incorporated into the curriculum of another scheduled course or taught as a separate course."

SECTION    2.    Section 59-29-10, as last amended by Act 400 of 1998, is further amended to read:

"Section 59-29-10.    The county board of education and the board of trustees for each school district shall see that in ensure that every school under their care there shall must be taught, as far as practicable, orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, English grammar and instruction in phonics, the elements of agriculture, the history of the United States and of this State, the principles of the Constitutions of the United States and of this State, morals and good behavior, algebra, physiology and hygiene (especially as to the effects of alcoholic liquors and narcotics upon the human system), English literature, credit management, and such other branches as the state board may from time to time direct."

SECTION    3.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
