VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MARION RICKS OF SUMTER FOR THE COURAGE AND HEROISM HE DISPLAYED WHEN HE FOUND AN ABANDONED BABY GIRL IN AN OVERGROWN VACANT LOT IN SUMTER ON JULY 24, 2002.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly applaud and honor Marion Ricks of Sumter for his heroic undertaking in finding and reporting an abandoned newborn girl in Sumter; and
Whereas, Marion Ricks, a fifth-grader at R. E. Davis Elementary School, was riding his bicycle with Darius Jenkins through a vacant lot when the boys heard a baby crying nearby; and
Whereas, Marion Ricks and Darius Jenkins demonstrated immense bravery and maturity when they found the baby and went to a neighboring home to report their finding; and
Whereas, as a result of their efforts, the baby, who had been exposed to the extreme summer heat and ant bites, was saved and was named Grace by the nurses at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia; and
Whereas, Marion Ricks and Darius Jenkins were recognized as heroes by the Sumter Police Department, Crime Stoppers, and local businesses and were awarded a shopping spree at local retail stores. Remaining monies will be placed in savings bonds for the boys; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the General Assembly recognize Marion Ricks for his valiant effort in saving the life of this helpless baby. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Marion Ricks of Sumter for the courage and heroism he displayed when he found an abandoned baby girl in an overgrown vacant lot in Sumter on July 24, 2002.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Marion Ricks of Sumter.
