A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JIM KARVELAS OF SUMTER ON FORTY-EIGHT SUCCESSFUL YEARS IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS DEDICATED WORK ETHIC, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to honor Jim Karvelas for his tremendous work ethic and for providing the citizens of Sumter with forty-eight years of fine cuisine; and

Whereas, Mr. Karvelas moved to Sumter with his family in 1944, and his father, John Karvelas, purchased Jim's Waffle Shop in the downtown area, which John and Jim Karvelas ran together. The restaurant provided curb-side service for many years and gave countless young people and others a place to socialize and a chance to earn some money and gain valuable work experience; and

Whereas, after his father died, Mr. Karvelas sold the restaurant and moved to a new location on Broad Street where he opened Big Jim's. He has spent a lifetime in the restaurant industry and learned that the secret to running a restaurant is diligence and long hours; and

Whereas, getting to know his customers and employees is the aspect Mr. Karvelas enjoyed most about operating a restaurant. He employed about twenty-five people, some of whom had worked at Big Jim's for as many as thirty-five years; and

Whereas, after working for most of his life, Mr. Karvelas is looking forward to some quiet time with his wife, Grace, and plans to spend his time watching television and traveling; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to honor Jim Karvelas for his commitment to his local community on the occasion of his retirement after forty-eight years in the restaurant industry. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Jim Karvelas of Sumter on forty-eight successful years in the restaurant industry, commend him for his dedicated work ethic, and extend best wishes to him and his family upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jim Karvelas of Sumter.
