A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF BESSIE HOOKS DAVIS OF BISHOPVILLE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2003, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LOVING FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of Bessie Hooks Davis of Bishopville on March 20, 2003, at the age of forty-seven; and

Whereas, Mrs. Davis was born and raised in Lee County and graduated from Lee County public schools. She continued her education at the University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, and Saint Leo University in the field of human resource management; and

Whereas, at the age of nineteen, Mrs. Davis began her career with the Lee County Council on Aging as a bookkeeper, through her tireless efforts, boundless energy, and undying devotion she served the Council and Lee County in may capacities, ultimately becoming the Executive Director of the Council; and

Whereas, under her outstanding leadership, the Council arose from financial difficulties to become a model program. As the Council grew in membership, its impact on the community grew immeasurably, providing myriad services for seniors and the community. The Council serves thousands of Meals on Wheels, and last year was named to the Angels List by the Secretary of State for making the best use of its money for member services; and

Whereas, through the Council on Aging, Mrs. Davis was able to develop mentoring programs to bring together the older and younger generations in Lee County. For her best-known project, the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, seniors through their wisdom and practical advice acted as mentors and role models to young women in the community; and

Whereas, Mrs. Davis was not only known for her service to seniors but also stood ready to help anyone in need. She was an active, faithful member of St. Mark Baptist Church, and she worked with the Lee County Interfaith Ministries, the Lee County Ministerial Alliance, and the Wateree Community Action Planning Committee; and

Whereas, Bessie Davis was a devoted wife and beloved mother. She made a tremendous difference in the lives of the people of Lee County, and she was loved and admired by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Bessie Hooks Davis. She is survived by her husband, Asbury Davis; three daughters, Taffney Hooks, Angie Hooks, and Coretta Hooks; a stepson, Derrick Davis; two stepdaughters, Sandra Ingram and Stephanie Davis; five grandchildren, Jaylin Tucker, Datrick Bennett, Kinsley Davis, Ashley Ingram, and Andrea Ingram; goddaughter, Ashley Dunham; a brother, Mark Mickens, three sisters, Jearline Mickens, Joe Ann Mickens, and Helen Mickens; and her mother, Mary Lee Mickens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Bessie Hooks Davis of Bishopville on Thursday, March 20, 2003, and convey deepest sympathy to her loving family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Bessie Hooks Davis of Bishopville.
