A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE MEMBERS, MINISTERS, STAFF, AND FRIENDS OF THE OLD PILGRIM MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF SIMPSONVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF ITS ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR.

Whereas, the "Pilgrim Baptist Church" records its beginnings in 1868, and the first service was held on July 20, 1868 when the church was officially completed. The charter members of the "Pilgrim Baptist Church" were John Abraham, Adam Ware, Eliza Do, Frances Ware, James Valentine, Elizabeth Clark, Charles Cook, Johnson Kilgore, Charlotte Abraham, Nancy Abraham, Clara Drummond, and their first pastor, Reverend John Abraham; and

Whereas, in 1894, the Reverend Thomas Jones was pastor and there was a controversy, which resulted in a reorganization of the church. The dissenting members formed another church and from 1894 until the present, the original church site has been known as Old Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church; and

Whereas, as the community continued to grow, the membership increased and in 1907, a new wooden church building was erected. The Pilgrim church structure was remodeled in 1967 and was enclosed with bricks and four educational rooms were added; and

Whereas, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in 1982 for the present building, which is a large brick church with a balcony and fellowship hall. Reverend D.E. Dennis was the pastor after the new building was constructed and the church congregation grew enormously; and

Whereas, Old Pilgrim installed its present pastor, Reverend Anthony Wilson in December 2002, and he plans to expand the building facility by adding an educational wing. Reverend Wilson and the Board of Deacon Ministry enacted a church mission: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world."; and

Whereas, the facilities of the church have grown from the small wooden church in 1868 to a wonderful, modern complex with multiple wings. Its list of ministers include some of the most distinguished preachers in South Carolina, and its congregation through the years with generosity and humility has been steadfast in their devotion to and following of God's word; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and acknowledge one hundred thirty-five years of humble devotion to God by this wonderful group of Christians and extend to the church and its members the General Assembly's best wishes and prayers for many more years of joyful and obedient service to God. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the members, ministers, staff, and friends of the Old Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of Simpsonville on the occasion of the celebration of its one hundred thirty-fifth anniversary this year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Pastor Anthony R. Wilson and the congregation of the Old Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of Simpsonville.
