TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND DR. WILLIAM F. "TED" YOUNG OF SUMTER ON RECEIVING THE PRESTIGIOUS 2003 CAREER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS HONORING HIS SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN PEDIATRICS AND CHILD CARE IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Dr. William F. "Ted" Young of Sumter began his lifetime of commitment to the care of children when he graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1950. He received a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1954; and

Whereas, after graduation, Dr. Young served as both captain of the Medical Department and as a major in the United States Air Force Reserves before beginning his pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; and

Whereas, the practice that Dr. Young opened with Dr. Charles Propst in 1956, known as Sumter Pediatrics, currently serves forty thousand patients a year with nine doctors on staff; and

Whereas, Dr. Young is the clinical professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and serves as the Wateree Head Start physician and consultant; and

Whereas, he has unselfishly shared his talents with the community, serving as past president of the Sumter-Clarendon-Lee County Medical Society, coordinating the first countywide immunization program for polio in the 1960s, and serving on the Sumter County Beautification Committee and the Board of Directors of the Easter Seal Society of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Young's many honors include: "Outstanding Contribution Toward Improving Access to Care in South Carolina for Mothers and Children" from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the 1991 Chapter President Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the 1999 William Weston Distinguished Service Award from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine for Pediatrics, and the Sumter Rotary Club's 2002 Rotarian of the Year Award; and

Whereas, this 2003 Career Achievement Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes a pediatrician who has made significant contributions in the field of pediatrics and child care in our State; and

Whereas the members of the General Assembly are proud to recognize Dr. William F. "Ted" Young of Sumter on receiving the 2003 Career Achievement Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, for his nearly fifty years in practicing and teaching pediatric medicine, and for his unwavering dedication and service to children. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly commend and congratulate Dr. William F. "Ted" Young of Sumter on receiving the prestigious 2003 Career Achievement Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics honoring his significant contributions in pediatrics and child care in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. William F. "Ted" Young of Sumter.
