VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-678 SO AS TO DESIGNATE GOLD AS THE OFFICIAL PRECIOUS METAL OF THE STATE.
Whereas, South Carolina was one of five states which were the main sources of gold in the United States for approximately forty-five years before the California gold discovery; and
Whereas, there are over one hundred gold mining and prospecting sites in eighteen counties of the State; and
Whereas, the town of Kershaw, South Carolina, was founded in 1888 when settlers flocked to the area in hopes of getting rich after gold was discovered at Haile Gold Mine in 1825. Now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 9, Chapter 1, Title 1 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 1-1-678. Gold is designated as the official precious metal of the State."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
