A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. VASHTI WASHINGTON, PRINCIPAL OF MT. ZION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ON BEING NAMED "RURAL EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2002-2003" AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly recognizes South Carolinians who are dedicated to helping build a sense of togetherness in young people and developing young minds in their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those who teach and to encourage these individuals who continue to inspire children year after year; and

Whereas, Dr. Vashti Washington, Principal of Mt. Zion Elementary School, has spent twenty-three years in public education and her dedication and spirit have helped her reach the top of her profession; and

Whereas, Dr. Washington received a B.A. in Speech Communications from Charleston Southern University and earned her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from the College of Charleston; and

Whereas, after earning her Masters in Early Childhood Education, she completed a Masters Degree in School Administration at The Citadel and went on to Nova Southeastern University where she earned a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration; and

Whereas, committing herself to teaching, Dr. Washington has served as both a teacher and an administrator in the Dorchester County School District and the Charleston County School District, and she has been a principal mentor with the South Carolina Department of Education; and

Whereas, as the Principal of Mt. Zion Elementary School, her devotion to education resulted in being named the "Rural Educator of the Year 2002-2003" by the South Carolina Association for Rural Education; and

Whereas, along with being honored as the "Rural Educator of the Year", Dr. Washington has also received the Omega Psi Phi Education Award, the Delta Sigma Theta Award, and has served on Governor Mark Sanford's Education Task Force; and

Whereas, although Dr. Washington is dedicated to education, she still finds time to be a devoted wife and mother of three children in whom she instills the values of hard work and excellence and most importantly, the will to succeed; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize this outstanding public educator on the occasion of her receiving this truly deserved award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Vashti Washington, Principal of Mt. Zion Elementary School, on being named "Rural Educator of the Year for 2002-2003" and extend to her best wishes in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Vashti Washington.
