A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AMBASSADOR JOHN CARL WEST FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND THIS NATION, AND TO OFFER SOLEMN PRAYERS FOR OUR BELOVED AMBASSADOR, FORMER GOVERNOR, AND FRIEND.

Whereas, Ambassador John Carl West was born on August 27, 1922, in Camden, South Carolina, the son of the late Shelton J. and Mattie Ratterree West of Camden; and

Whereas, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from The Citadel in 1942, graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1948, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa; and

Whereas, Ambassador West married Lois Rhame of Camden on August 29, 1942, and together they are the proud parents of three children; and

Whereas, he is a World War II veteran; and

Whereas, he was a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1955 to 1966, served as Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1966 to 1971 and as Governor of South Carolina from 1971 to 1975; and

Whereas, in 1977 he was appointed United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia by former President Jimmy Carter; and

Whereas, it is with great sorrow that the members of the House of Representatives have learned that Ambassador West is gravely ill, and wish to offer our sincere prayers for him and his family during this difficult period. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Ambassador John Carl West for his many years of dedicated service to the people of South Carolina and this nation, and offer our solemn prayers for our beloved Ambassador, former Governor, and friend.
