TO CONGRATULATE THE GAFFNEY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM AND THEIR COACHES, MARK HUFF AND MARK IRETON, ON THEIR EXTRAORDINARY DEDICATION, DETERMINATION, AND HARD WORK THROUGHOUT THE 2002-2003 SEASON AND ON CAPTURING THE CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE ON FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2003.

Whereas, the game of basketball affords young people the opportunity to learn the importance of dedication and teamwork while developing amazing athletic talents; and

Whereas, becoming a champion in this sport requires every member of the team and coaching staff to have special leadership skills and physical prowess, as well as a finely honed ability to communicate effectively on the court; and

Whereas, using these talents, in concert with pure drive, determination, and countless hours of hard work, the members of the Boys' Basketball Team of Gaffney High School reigned victorious game after game defeating every opponent and becoming one of the best teams in the history of the South Carolina High School League; and

Whereas, with an outstanding performance from a top notch team and the superb coaching of Head Coach Mark Huff and Assistant Coach Mark Ireton, the Gaffney High School Boys' Basketball Team beat Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School to become the Class AAAA Upper State Champions and entered the state playoffs with a 23-0 record, being the first undefeated season of record and the first trip to the playoffs for Gaffney High School since 1984; and

Whereas, the team continued its winning streak throughout the playoffs, finishing the season with a perfect 28-0 record, and emerged victorious as the Class AAAA State Champion by defeating Dutch Fork High School on Friday, March 7, 2003, by a score of 79-66; and

Whereas, with this unprecedented season and outstanding victory, the 2002-2003 Gaffney High School Boys' Basketball Team became the first team in Gaffney since 1949 to be named State Champions; and

Whereas, it is with great pride and immense pleasure that we recognize the physical and mental abilities of these young South Carolinians and hope that they will use those skills both on and off the basketball court. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the Gaffney High School Boys' Basketball Team and their coaches, Mark Huff and Mark Ireton, on their extraordinary dedication, determination, and hard work throughout the 2002-2003 season and on capturing the Class AAAA State Championship Title on Friday, March 7, 2003.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the members of the Gaffney High School Boys' Basketball Team and Coach Mark Huff.
