A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2003 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, THE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2004 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP, AND BOTH TEAMS FOR THEIR MANY OTHER ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS, AND TO WISH BOTH TEAMS' MEMBERS AND THEIR COACHES CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL OF THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were pleased to learn that the Coastal Carolina Women's Cross-Country Team won the 2003 Big South Conference Championship in November 2003, and the Women's Track and Field Team won the 2004 Big South Conference Indoor Track Championship in February 2004; and

Whereas, the Cross-Country Team's championship title is the latest in a long tradition of success which includes conference championships in 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2002; and

Whereas, the nationally ranked team has participated in sixteen National Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships (NCAA) since 1995 in cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track; and

Whereas, members of the team have won seven NCAA Division 1 All American Honors since 1997; and

Whereas, the team boasts a five-time NCAA Division 1 All American in Track and Field, weight thrower and hammer thrower Amber Campbell who, also has had four finishes in USA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships over the past three years, finished as the top collegiate in each year, and captured a bronze medal in February of 2004. Her performances earned her a spot on the USA National Under 25 Track and Field Team for which she earned a silver medal for the United States at an international competition where thirty-two countries were represented; and

Whereas, the entire Cross-Country Team has earned United States Cross-Country Coaches Association All-Academic with Distinction Team honors for seven consecutive years with a cumulative team GPA each year of 3.5; and

Whereas, the entire track and field team has ranked seventh and third academically by the United States Track Coaches Association in 2002 and 2003 out of three hundred twenty-seven NCAA Division 1 teams with a cumulative GPA each year of over 3.3; and;

Whereas, the Cross-Country and Track and Field Teams have had three members named to the Verizon Academic All American Track and Field Team; and

Whereas, Head Coach Alan Connie has been named Big South Conference Coach of the Year sixteen times in his eighteen-year career in Cross-Country, Indoor Track and Field, and Outdoor Track and Field; and

Whereas, six of the last eight Big South Conference Female Scholar Athletes of the Year for all sports have been members of the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Team, and four of the past five Big South Conference Female Athletes of the Year for all sports have been members of the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Team; and

Whereas, Head Coach Alan Connie, and assistant coaches Carrie Lane, Tim Vaught, and Steve Johnson have worked hard to bring honor to the University, Horry County, and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Coastal Carolina University Women's Cross-Country Team for winning the 2003 Big South Conference Championship, the Women's Track and Field Team for winning the 2004 Big South Conference Indoor Track Championship, and both teams for their many other athletic and academic achievements, and wish the team members and their coaches much continued success in all of their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Alan Connie on behalf of the Coastal Carolina University Women's Cross-Country Team and Women's Track and Field Team.
