A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. CHARLA GROVES OF SUMMERVILLE ON BEING NAMED THE 2003-2004 BERKELEY COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR, COMMEND HER FOR HER HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION, AND TO WISH HER EVERY SUCCESS IN ALL FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to learn that Mrs. Charla Groves of Summerville, a seventh grade teacher at College Park Middle School, has been named 2003-2004 Berkeley County Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, Mrs. Groves began her teaching career at College Park Middle School in August of 1996 after graduating from the College of Charleston; and

Whereas, she previously has taught science, math, and reading to eighth graders, and currently teaches seventh grade social studies and ProTeam. ProTeam is a class offered at very few middle schools in the State and is sponsored by the South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment; and

Whereas, the purpose of ProTeam is to encourage students to enter the teaching profession, and it tries to lead students into the Teacher Cadet program in the high schools. Mrs. Groves has done a wonderful job promoting this class, and she recruits students from feeder schools for this program; and

Whereas, Mrs. Groves is well-suited for the social studies position since the seventh grade social studies standards address geography, and she has lived in India, Pakistan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Chile, and El Salvador; and

Whereas, as a member of the Berkeley County Reading Council, she is very much involved in the efforts of the South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment as a member of its task force. Additionally, she is a member of the PTA at College Park Middle School and is a member of the Middle School Association; and

Whereas, Mrs. Groves is married to Brian Groves and they are sixth grade youth group counselors for their church, Bethany United Methodist Church. She also serves as the GAB Coordinator; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this outstanding educator on the occasion of her receipt of this truly deserved award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate hereby congratulate Mrs. Charla Groves of Summerville on being named the 2003-2004 Berkeley County Teacher of the Year, commend her for her hard work and commitment to education, and wish her every success in all future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Charla Groves of Summerville.
