A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE ON THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE W.R. "BOBBY" DOUGLAS, SR., OF CHEROKEE COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of the Honorable W.R. "Bobby" Douglas, Sr., of Cherokee County at the age of 82 on Saturday, January 24, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center; and

Whereas, he was the beloved husband of Sarah LeMaster Douglas for sixty years and the son of the late George William Douglas and the late Myrtle Coffey Douglas; and

Whereas, together with his wife, he raised two sons and one daughter: William Robert Douglas, Jr., George Richard Douglas, and Jeanne Douglas Bovair; and

Whereas, for fifty-two years he served as the Probate Judge for Cherokee County and was the longest and oldest serving probate judge in the State; and

Whereas, Judge Douglas contributed to his community in many ways throughout his lifetime which was spent in his native Gaffney; and

Whereas, he was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Judge Douglas was proud to be a lifetime member of Lafayette Lodge Ancient Free Masons in Gaffney and a supporter of Meals on Wheels and Connie Maxwell Children's Home; and

Whereas, funeral services honoring and celebrating his life were held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, and the pallbearers were Hoke Parris, Charles Mathis, Ned Mullinax, Buddy McCraw, Robbie Douglas, and Raymond C. Eubanks, Jr., with honorary pallbearers James Batchelor and Dean Ross; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is proud to honor the many contributions that Judge Douglas made to the Gaffney community and the State over the past eighty-two years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express the profound sorrow of the members of the South Carolina Senate on the death of the Honorable W.R. "Bobby" Douglas, Sr., of Cherokee County and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Judge W.R. "Bobby" Douglas, Sr.
