A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF BISHOP VINTON RANDOLPH ANDERSON UPON HIS RETIREMENT IN FEBRUARY, 2004, AND EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM ON HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson was born in Somerset, Bermuda and attended the private elementary schools there; and

Whereas, he came to the United States and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio. Affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Wilberforce University is the oldest historically black private college in the United States; and

Whereas, remaining in Ohio, Bishop Anderson went on to receive his Master of Divinity Degree from Payne Theological Seminary and then attended the University of Kansas to obtain his Master's Degree in Philosophy; and

Whereas, Bishop Anderson was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in 1951 and then an Itinerant Elder in 1952; and

Whereas, in 1972, he was elected the 92nd Bishop of the Church at the General Conference in Dallas, Texas; and

Whereas, Bishop Anderson presided over the 15th, 9th, and 3rd Episcopal Districts, served as Bicentennial Chairman, Ecumenical Officer, and Chairman of the General Conference Commission, and also served in the 5th and 2nd Episcopal Districts; and

Whereas, his ecumenical contributions were felt worldwide through his service as Vice Chairman of the North American Section including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, Chairman of the Committee on Religion and Society for the Global Economic Action Institute, Chairman of Worship and Liturgy for the Consultation on Church Union providing leadership for the development of the Bicentennial Edition of the AMEC hymnal and the first Book of Worship; and

Whereas, Bishop Anderson is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Methodist Council, the General Commission on Christian Unity and Inter-religious Concern of the United Methodist Church, the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches, and the Advisory of the United States Office of the World Council of Churches; and

Whereas, a dedicated and loving family man, Bishop Anderson raised four sons: Vinton, Jr., Jeffrey, Carlton, and Kenneth with his wife Vivienne L. Anderson; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina General Assembly recognizes Bishop Anderson for over fifty years of dedication and service to building faith among the people of the congregations and communities he served. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and recognize the accomplishments of Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson upon his retirement in February, 2004, and extend best wishes to him on his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson.
