CONGRATULATING THE CARVERS BAY HIGH SCHOOL "BEARS" ON THEIR CLASS AA STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND COMMENDING THE PLAYERS AND THE COACHES ON ACHIEVING THAT MARK IN ONLY THE THIRD YEAR OF THE "BEARS" FOOTBALL PROGRAM AT THE GEORGETOWN COUNTY SCHOOL.
Whereas, Carvers Bay High School in Georgetown County fielded its first football team only three years ago, but brought home the State AA Crown from Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia following a 21-19 win over Abbeville on December 7, 2002; and
Whereas, although the fledgling team matched the pre-game favorite on all the final game stats, the Abbeville Panthers could not come back from the overpowering 21-point, 246-yard Bears' first half capped by a 63-yard Hail Mary connection between quarterback Nathan Grate and Joshua Greene with only a second left to go; and
Whereas, the Carvers Bay team may be a recent entry in high school football, the three-year-old consolidated school has proud football histories from both its partner schools, Choppee and Pleasant Hill; and
Whereas, Head Coach Nate Thompson and his outstanding staff coached the team hard and celebrated joyfully in their success and in the pride the young men's efforts brought to the Hemingway community served by Carvers Bay. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Carvers Bay High School "Bears" on their Class AA State Football Championship and commend the players and the coaches on achieving that mark in only the third year of the "Bears" football program at the Georgetown County School.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Nate Thompson on behalf of the team and school officials.
