A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JOSHUA SIMS PATTERSON OF HOPKINS ON BEING CHOSEN AS A MOREHEAD SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mr. Joshua Sims Patterson was born on November 1, 1985, in Columbia to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Patterson. He is an honor student at the Hammond School and involved in many extracurricular activities; and

Whereas, Mr. Patterson played varsity football for three years and was selected to the All-Region team and named Most Valuable Player in 2002. He has also excelled on the wrestling team and was voted the Most Improved Wrestler in his sophomore year, received a Wrestling Award in 2003, and was on the First Place Wrestling Team his senior year; and

Whereas, an active member of his community and church, Mr. Patterson served as youth group treasurer at Goodwill Baptist Church and as an alternate Sunday school teacher. He is a tutor at the Wednesday night fellowship and was a Little League baseball coach; and

Whereas, Mr. Patterson is a member of many clubs at the Hammond School including the Foreign Language Club, Literary Club, Red Circle, Drama Club, Film Club, and president of the Young Democrats. He is a member and president of the math team and was selected to the All-State Math team. Mr. Patterson has competed at several math meets and performed extremely well; and

Whereas, recently, Mr. Patterson was selected among fifteen hundred students nominated for a Morehead Scholarship Award at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The Morehead Scholarship is worth one hundred twenty thousand dollars to an out-of-state student that provides tuition, books, room and board, a laptop computer, and a stipend for spending money each semester; and

Whereas, the criteria for selecting students to receive the Morehead Scholarship include the capacity to lead and motivate fellow students, scholastic ability and extracurricular activities, moral force of character, and physical vigor as shown by participation in sports or in other ways; and

Whereas, Mr. Patterson scored a 1440 on the college entrance exam, anchors the math team, excelled in both football and wrestling, and is involved with many high school, community, and church groups making him an excellent candidate for the Morehead Scholarship; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor Mr. Joshua Patterson on receiving the prestigious Morehead Scholarship Award for his many outstanding accomplishments while attending the Hammond School. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Joshua Sims Patterson of Hopkins on being chosen as a Morehead Scholarship recipient at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, commend him for his hard work and commitment to academic excellence, and wish him much success in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Joshua Sims Patterson of Hopkins.
