TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF RALEIGH W. BLACKMAN, SR., OF WOODRUFF SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2003, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of Raleigh W. Blackman, Sr., of Woodruff on May 4, 2003, at the age of seventy-eight; and
Whereas, a native of Bennettsville and son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Alonzo Blackman, Mr. Blackman valiantly served in four European campaigns in the United States Army during World War II; and
Whereas, Mr. Blackman graduated from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to further his education and obtained a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg; and
Whereas, a retiree from Spartanburg County School District Four, Mr. Blackman positively influenced the lives of countless young people as he held positions as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal, and he served on the school board for ten years; and
Whereas, as an active member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Mr. Blackman served as Chairman and Secretary of the Trustee Board and as a Sunday School teacher; and
Whereas, Mr. Blackman shared his leadership and membership in many community organizations including the American Legion Post #270, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Helping Hands Ministries, Friends of the Library, County Rescue Squad, and Claflin University Alumni Association. He was also a voting precinct leader and was inducted into the Claflin University Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, Mr. Blackman was a master carpenter and enjoyed remodeling homes and making wood items in his shop; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives extend their sympathy to the family and many friends of Raleigh W. Blackman, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Hennie Wannamaker Blackman; his son, Raleigh W. Blackman, Jr.; three daughters, Hilda Patrease Morrison, Forrest Lynette Scarborough, Charmayne Valencia Belcher; a niece, Sonja McIntosh; a brother, Alonzo Blackman; and eight grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Raleigh W. Blackman, Sr., of Woodruff Sunday, May 4, 2003, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Hennie Blackman of Woodruff.
