A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF ROBERT EDWARD CONNELLY, SR., OF ALLENDALE COUNTY WHO DIED SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2004.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn of the death of Robert Edward Connelly, Sr., who died on Saturday, February 21, 2004; and

Whereas, Mr. Connelly was born January 7, 1923, in Jennys, Allendale County, a son of the late John Frank Connelly and Clara Estell Harter Connelly; and

Whereas, he attended Allendale County schools and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of sixteen; and

Whereas, Mr. Connelly served as a staff sergeant in World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge under General Patton; and

Whereas, after returning to Allendale County, he expanded the family farm into a successful operation which includes all three of his children, their spouses, and now several grandchildren; and

Whereas, Robert Edward Connelly, Sr., and his family have received numerous awards and honors for their farming methods and commodity yields, including being recognized as Master Farm Family of South Carolina by Clemson University and Progressive Farmer magazine; and

Whereas, he was president of the Allendale County Farm Bureau for over thirty-five years and was a director of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation; and

Whereas, Mr. Connelly served as magistrate for Sycamore Township for many years and was on the Allendale County Board of Education for over twenty years serving several terms as chairman; and

Whereas, Mr. Connelly was a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church near Sycamore serving in many positions of leadership; and

Whereas, he is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mrs. Elma Eugenia Lazar Connelly, two sons and a daughter and numerous grandchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the General Assembly express their profound sympathy to the family of Robert Edward Connelly, Sr., of Allendale County who died Saturday, February 21, 2004.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Connelly.
