Whereas, after forty-three rewarding years as a family doctor in Darlington, Dr. Joe Matthews is hanging up his stethoscope in retirement; and

Whereas, influenced by his grandfather's love of the practice of medicine as a country doctor making house calls during the Great Depression, Dr. Matthews began practicing medicine in 1961; and

Whereas, during his tenure of practice, Dr. Matthews has seen great strides in the practice of medicine including the development of major medical centers, advances in drugs and diagnostic equipment, and a better understanding of diseases; and

Whereas, when Dr. Matthews began practicing medicine, he worked with Dr. John M. Wilson and eventually opened his own practice, Pee Dee Medical Care, in 1975; and

Whereas, in his retirement, Dr. Matthews and his wife of forty-seven years, Ruthie, plan to spend time with their five children and fifteen grandchildren and increase their vacations to the Grand Cayman Islands; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to recognize such an upstanding and dedicated South Carolinian as Dr. Joe Matthews for his commitment to healing and helping the citizens of Darlington and the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
